Study abroad, as mere idea, seems relatively simple at first; you're a student, you crave independence, you dream of exploring the world . . . but then the complications set in. Whether those include dealing with a complicated graduation schedule, messy credit transfers, or anxieties surrounding change in general, there are plenty of reasons to stay at home. So is study abroad worth all the hassle? Absolutely.

Here's why:

It's a foot in the doorway for your future. On the most basic level, having any amount of international experience will benefit your career path, no matter what it may be. Having spent time abroad in a foreign culture for academic purposes not only looks fantastic on a resume, but also makes you stand apart from other job candidates; it shows a certain versatility and adaptability that is unique to study abroad alumni. But even more specifically, the kind of work you do abroad also becomes a massive asset. Participating in major-specific programs or industry-specific internships gives you excellent footing in your chosen field, and makes you more likely to be hired. On top of all this, you may make professional connections through your international networking, as internship companies may remember or recommend you for future work.

There's no better way to experience world culture. You can read all about the city of your dreams in books, or google pictures of its architecture online, but nothing compares to being there in person. Exposing yourself to different ideals, norms, and ways of life is one of the most valuable experiences you can have while studying abroad. When you are stuck within the bubble of your familiar, you can't become as well-rounded or educated in global perspectives. By living in a new country, immersed in foreign culture, you develop new respects for the unfamiliar that you otherwise may not have.

You will irrevocably grow as a person. I can't stress this point enough. Study abroad is a life-changing experience that will leave you with more strength, maturity, and independence than you could ever imagine. It's the kind of transformation that comes from pushing yourself out of your comfort zone in an undoubtedly profound way. For anyone looking for something to be passionate about, something to be bold for, something to help them grow up: this is it. I promise you will never regret it.
